Why not put old episodes of daytime soaps on DVD?

August 1, 6:30 PM

In my younger days (about 25 years ago), I was a fan of soap operas. Actually, just one. It was "All My Children."

I remember when Tom was married to Erica. (How many husbands ago was that?) I remember Palmer trying to keep Nina from marrying Cliff. When Nina's real mother Daisy appeared to her as a ghost because Palmer was trying to keep them apart. That was a long time ago.

Those were good shows.

My wife and I once attended an event several years back where Nina (Taylor Miller at that time) , Cliff (Peter Bergman), Palmer (James Mitchell) and Jesse (Darnell Williams) all appeared. It was at that event it was announced (presumably for the first time) that Phoebe Tyler was going to marry young Wade Matthews. I still remember the crowd roaring in surprise. There was no internet like there is now to quickly spread the news. Somehow, I don't think that would be announced today.

Why aren't some of these archival episodes of soaps on DVD? Some compilations are on VHS, but for some reason, the networks have never released the soaps on DVD.

We'd think they'd be popular. Do you?

  1. I would love for some early episodes of daytime soaps be put on DVD. They've did this with some British and Australian soaps from the 1960-1980s, but for some reason the US hasn't caught on yet that fans of the shows might be interested in seeing how their favorite soap began. Maybe give us the first 25-30 episodes of "All My Children", "One Life to Live" or "The Young and the Restless". I'd buy those DVDs ASAP!

  2. I know that AMC has all the episodes available except for maybe a few. I think OLTL does and I am sure Y&R do.

But many of the shows are sadly not available from the beginning. Whereas the night time shows were preserved so many of the early daytime shows even well into the late 60's were either taped over or destroyed. Very little of some of them even exists anywhere.

    It's sad.

As I said on Facebook if they can't do full years or whatever, there are certain stories I wouldn't mind them going back and doing special DVD box sets of.

For instance the Mitch/Rachel/Mac/Janice story on AW or the Karen Wolek Story from OLTL or even the Paul Williams undercover story from Y&R and so many other ones that I would love to see all over again.
